All default blogger templates have a credits area in the footer which lists the template name and its author. This credits area cannot be removed using the ‘Layout’ page as it is locked. In this post, we will show you how to remove it by making some changes to the code of your blog template.

Go to Template -> Edit HTML

Click inside the HTML area and press Ctrl+F. This will open the search box. Type Attribution and press Enter.

You will find the following code.

      <!-- outside of the include in order to lock Attribution widget -->
      <b:section class='foot' id='footer-3' showaddelement='no'>
        <b:widget id='Attribution1' locked='true' title='' type='Attribution'>
          <b:includable id='main'>
    <b:if cond='data:feedbackSurveyLink'>
      <div class='mobile-survey-link' style='text-align: center;'>
        <data:feedbackSurveyLink/>
      </div>
    </b:if>

    <div class='widget-content' style='text-align: center;'>
      <b:if cond='data:attribution != &quot;&quot;'>
       <data:attribution/>
      </b:if>
    </div>

    <b:include name='quickedit'/>
  </b:includable>
        </b:widget>
      </b:section>

Replace the above code with the following.

      <!-- outside of the include in order to lock Attribution widget -->
<!--
      <b:section class='foot' id='footer-3' showaddelement='no'>
        <b:widget id='Attribution1' locked='true' title='' type='Attribution'>
          <b:includable id='main'>
    <b:if cond='data:feedbackSurveyLink'>
      <div class='mobile-survey-link' style='text-align: center;'>
        <data:feedbackSurveyLink/>
      </div>
    </b:if>

    <div class='widget-content' style='text-align: center;'>
      <b:if cond='data:attribution != &quot;&quot;'>
       <data:attribution/>
      </b:if>
    </div>

    <b:include name='quickedit'/>
  </b:includable>
        </b:widget>
      </b:section>
-->

The only change we made is enclosing the code within <!– and –>. This will comment out the code and ensure that it is not executed which will prevent the credits area from being displayed.

Click ‘Save Template’.

If you want to show the credits area again, you simply need to replace the new code with the old one.

How it works?

A blogger template is made up of sections defined by the <b:section> tag. Sections can contain widgets like archives, labels, recent posts, Text/HTML etc. The credits section contains a single ‘Attribution’ widget defined by the <b:widget> tag. The widget tag can contain the locked attribute. When set to true, it cannot be removed using the Layout manager which is the case with the Credits widget.

Is it ok to remove attribution?

If you asking if the template will continue to work normally after removing the attribution, then the answer is yes. Some template authors include comments such as ‘Removing the attribution will cause the template to malfunction’ which is not true.

However, if your question is ‘Is it ethical to remove attribution?’, then the answer, unfortunately is no. The template author has provided the template free of charge and all that he needs is proper credit to him. If he would not have wanted the attribution, he would have either not included it or would have provided an easy way to remove it from the Layout manager itself.

It is up to you to decide how ethical it is to remove the credits to the template author.
